What is housing in exchange for services in Paris?
A host makes a room — sometimes an independent studio — available to someone who provides regular help in return. No rent changes hands: the counterpart for the roof is a set of services defined in the listing itself, with their schedule and weekly volume. The formula suits very different households — busy families, seniors attached to their home, owners who travel often — and answers the pressure of the Paris rental market. For a host-side walkthrough, see our guide to offering your room as housing for services in Paris.
What services can a host ask for?
- Picking children up from school and supervising homework
- Keeping an elderly parent company, escorting them to appointments
- Handling routine housekeeping, laundry or the evening meal
- Sleeping in to provide a reassuring overnight presence
- Giving lessons, practising a language, fixing the computer
- Caring for the garden, pets or small repairs
How does a listing unfold, from posting to moving in?
The host describes the room on offer, the neighbourhood, the expected services and the ceiling on hours; candidates reply with their actual availability. After a first exchange and a meeting, both parties put the agreement on paper: identities, the room and shared spaces, the list of duties, the schedule, the length of the stay and how it ends. Dated and signed in two copies, this document stands in for a lease and serves as the reference throughout the cohabitation.
What the law says
These lines are general information, not legal advice. Exchanging a roof for help falls under a private agreement between individuals, not under the French tenancy law of 6 July 1989: the resident is not a tenant in the legal sense, and the help provided must stay within an agreed frame so it cannot be read as disguised employment. If the weekly volume seems high, seek advice before signing.

FAQ — housing in exchange for services in Paris
Does housing in exchange for services qualify for French housing benefit (APL)?
In principle no: with no rent paid, the benefit does not apply. It is only conceivable if the agreement includes a residual contribution and the home is your main residence — check with the CAF before committing.
How is it different from a standard flatshare?
In a flatshare, everyone pays a share of the rent and signs a lease; here, no rent is due and the relationship rests on a freely drafted agreement. You share less an apartment than a daily routine, with commitments on both sides.
What length should a first cohabitation have?
A renewable three-month agreement leaves time to check that habits align without binding anyone too far. Many then extend across the academic year.
How does the cohabitation end?
As set out in the signed document: reasonable notice, keys handed back and a look at the room’s condition. Which is why those terms belong in writing from day one.
